Battery capacity
The typical unit of measurement for power supply equipment's capacity is kV · A or kW. However, when considering a VRLA battery as a power source, it's more accurate to express its capacity in terms of ampere hours (A · h). The battery's capacity is defined as the integral of the discharge current over time, from t0 to td, where t can theoretically approach infinity. However, discharging the battery past its termination voltage and continuing the discharge can result in damage to the battery. As such, the value of t is limited. In the battery industry, the hour (h) is used to indicate the battery's sustainable discharge time and is represented by nominal capacity values like C24, C20, C10, C8, C3, and C1.

 


In the realm of batteries, the capacity is denoted differently depending on their size. Small batteries have their capacity measured in milliampere hours (mA · h), while large batteries have it measured in ampere hours (A · h) and kiloampere hours (kA · h). The telecommunications industry often uses nominal capacity values like C10 and C8. For instance, let's consider the 12AVR100SH Deka battery, which is a single unit with a 12V output and a capacity of 100 A · h. This battery is capable of discharging continuously for 10 hours with a current of 10A. Consequently, the total discharge ampere hour would amount to 10 * 10 = 100 A · h. During testing, it is essential to make adjustments to the external circuit load to ensure a constant current value when the voltage varies.
